Hi Laura,
The difficulty is that specific directions depend on what application you use to edit your photo (to 64x64 pixels) and what online service you use to host the finished photo.
In general terms, you open the photo for editing and change the dimensions to 64x64 pixels. Looking at the other icons shown here, you can see that closeups work much better. When you have done that, save the resized photo. Next, upload the resized photo to the service you have chosen to host the photo (like Flikr).
Next comes the tricky part. Some of the services do not allow you to link directly to the photo. Flikr allows this, but you have to dig a bit to find the URL of the photo. Whatever service you use, you need to come up with a URL that will display ONLY the photo, NOT a display page. So here is the test, when you come up with the URL, copy and paste it directly into the address line on your web browser. If the resulting page shows ONLY the photo, you are in business. If it shows an album page, or captions, or anything else, you haven't got the right URL. Use help or technical support to get to that URL.
When you have a working URL, logon to the forum and go into settings and edit profile. In the Select Avatar section, type or paste the full URL into the entry box (don't forget the "http:// . . ."). Then click on the Preview button. Your photo should be displayed. Do NOT click on "Upload Avatar". At the bottom of the page, click on Update Profile. That's it.
I hope that helps.
Hugs, Greer
